Pupils as Leaders

Pupils enjoy coming to school. They especially like the different leadership roles they can take on.

At Hursthead Junior School, we are passionate about developing children who are leaders. We want our children to become valued citizens of the future, making a positive difference to their communities. We teach the children that leadership is not about the positions you hold, but the way in which you lead by example, demonstrating strong values and having the courage to stand up for what you believe. As they move through school, there are many opportunities for the children to take on leadership roles. Every class has a School Councillor who also drive the reaccreditation process for our Gold Rights Respecting Schools’ Award. This year we will be electing Mental Health Champions for each class and reintroducing Restorative Ambassadors to help other children resolve their differences in a calm, respectful and reflective way. We also have a working party of pupils who are helping to rewrite our anti-bullying policy in line with our new behaviour policy and procedures. Older children have the opportunity to work with younger children, as Maths Champions, Science Leaders, Digital Leaders, Music Leaders, Sports Leaders and Librarians. In Year 6, eight children are elected by the children in Years 3,4 and 5 in their families to become Family Leaders after a rigorous selection process.
